"Family Learning with K'NEX" training workshop

Purpose of workshop: To help Family Learning practitioners learn how the K'NEX construction kit might assist them to meet their learning objectives.

Who is the workshop for: Anyone involved in family learning, including family literacy, family numeracy, family IT, and all other types of family learning. The workshop will be of interest to staff who manage, and to staff who deliver, family learning programmes.

Prior knowledge required: No prior experience with K’NEX is required, and you definitely do not need to be "good at technology"! Some experience in family learning is desirable, though not essential.

Comments from the workshops held to date:
"I found the whole day very useful and well presented"
"Great to learn something new and achievable"
"This has been the most enjoyable course I have attended in a long time"

Workshop content: The workshop lasts a whole day, and can be accredited at Level 2 by OCN if required. Delegates will have an opportunity to use both traditional K'NEX and the newer Kid K'NEX. Each delegate will receive a copy of the workshop slides. A typical agenda for the day is as follows:

09.30 Registration and coffee
10.00 Introduction to K’NEX
10.30 Practical session - A K’NEX and a Kid K'NEX model
10.45 Why use K’NEX in family learning?
11.30 Tea and coffee
11.45 Practical session - A K’NEX Swing challenge
12.45  Lunch
13.45 Planning and delivering K'NEX family learning events
14.45 Practical session - A K'NEX motorised roundabout challenge
15.45 Close

Practical sessions: Delegates will work in small groups for the practical sessions. These are light-hearted and enjoyable as well being informative, such as "Make a swing for a Fimble" (see photo).

Cost: Workshops are usually hosted in-house by LEAs, FE colleges, libraries, museums and voluntary sector bodies. The cost is typically £395, plus mileage and subsistence, and VAT. If you require OCNW accreditation, there is an extra certification cost, for which we can quote you on request.
